Summary of Gojek’s Timeline. The Past, the Present, the Future

If you have read my previous articles or have heard about Gojek or maybe even use some of the services the app provides then you might already know the business Gojek is in.

But if not, then you are in for a Go-ride! Get it get it? Nevermind, just trying to be funny. Anyways, let’s get to it.

The year was 2009 and the idea of Gojek started. Co-founded by Nadiem Makarim, Kevin Aluwi, and Michaelangelo Moran (probably didn't know who he is right? Me too lol). Started as a call center, with a fleet of 20 motorcycles.

The year was 2014 and a couple of years went by. Ups and downs, lefts, and rights but in short they were good years! In the western hemisphere, there was a rise in popularity of Uber and the entire investment world started magnifying and of course, started throwing money into ride-hailing services. Now in 2020, there is Uber, Lyft, Juno, Via, Curb, Gett, Grab, Cabify, Ola, BlablaCar, Jrney, Didi, Careem, or Didi Chuxing (formerly Didi Kuaidi), Bolt (formerly Taxify), and of course Gojek. Honestly, I’m pretty sure there are more companies that I don’t know about. There was even that red-colored new player in the Indonesian market called Bonceng who is trying to penetrate the market of ‘Pasar’.

Pasar. : an Indonesian public market.

The year was 2015, and Uber just renamed UberFresh into UberEats when Gojek released GoFood (my favorite — I love food)! Started with a few merchant partners, lotsa bugs, and a bunch of frauds (I dislike those people stealing my food). In 2020, GoFood now has around 550,000 vendors across Indonesia and is one of the top food delivery services in the world.

Gojek’s Founder and CEO, Nadiem Makariem said the gross transaction value (GTV) has increased by 13.5 times up from 2016 to 2018. In terms of nominal, it has exceeded $9 billion (around Rp127 trillion) in 2018 and reached two billion transaction a year in total. — Kristin Siagian wrote on a Daily Social article.

The year was 2016, and GoPay was launched. This was a pivotal moment in the company since the world was starting to lean on e-payment solutions lead by WeChatPay and AliPay in China. Currently, in China you literally can pay almost anything just by using e-payment solutions, no more cash, no more coins. GoPay started with in-app payments only and slowly shifted toward offline merchants as well. In 2020, you can use GoPay to pay anything within the Gojek app and can be used as a payment method across a bunch of other services like paying for electricity, water, internet, etc.

The year was 2017, and GoBiz (formerly GoResto) was launched. Again, this was a pivotal moment, especially for GoFood merchants. Now, they can easily update their menus, prices, and details with their own control. In 2020, the services provided by GoBiz as stated on the website is as follows: POS System, Ordering Raw Materials, Promotion Tools, Payment Systems (Offline and Online), and Logistics.

The year was 2019, Nadiem stepped down as CEO and appointed Kevin Aluwi and Andre Soelistyo to helm the roles of Co-CEO as he ventures into his new chapter of being the Ministry of Education for Indonesia. During Bloomberg Sooner Than You Think in Singapore on Sept 5th, 2019 (video here), then-President now Co-CEO of Gojek (Andre) verbally mentioned Third-party Platforms (3PP) as Gojek’s newest Pillar. (you cannot express the joy I had despite being a newbie in the team)

What are Gojek’s 4 Pillars you ask?

  1. Transportation
  2. Food
  3. Payment
  4. 3PP
